Most people can tell when their car is driving a bit differently, because their senses tell them something is off. Don’t worry if you are an aloof driver who doesn’t have the “SPIDEY-SENSES” gene. Your car will alert you. Be kind to your vehicle and respond  as soon as possible.

Pay attention to your dashboard for system malfunctions and service calls. Don’t  just focus on the gas gauge. If you are not sure what an ICON means, look to your owners manual for more information.

Unfortunately a few of us think that  if a car is still running then “All’s Well That Ends Well!”  is just as good a motto to go by as any. Little do we know that the issue we were  alerted to may be spreading like cancer.

For example,  ABS or Anti-lock Braking Systems ICON, can go from a not so bad problem to a driver needing rotors as well. All they needed  was to renew the brake pads. You’d be surprised how many people bring their cars to us only WHEN or IF they hear their wheels squealing!

I understand it may boil down to cost and out of pocket expenses, but if expense is an issue then why are we driving a luxury car in the first place. Take care of your vehicle, listen to your alerts, and your car will take care of you.

“KNOWING YOUR TIRE PRESSURE”

Most car owners know something about tire pressure, also known as P.S.I. or Pounds per Square Inch. You can find out what your P.S.I. is for your car a number of ways. The foremost method people use is to locate it on the outside of the tire. It is hard to see because the tire is black, but if you don’t mind getting on the ground, getting dirty, or even squinting a little it, you will be successful.

Checking your Owners Manual or the Tire Loading Information sticker would be a cleaner more practical way. You only need to go to your index of the owners manual for ‘tires’ to locate the page for the information. As for the sticker , it is typically adhered  on the drivers’ front door frame next to the manufacturing sticker.

Both of these methods give the driver other important information about the vehicle. They will tell you 4 things; the maximum  load capacity/ weight of cargo that can be put in your car for your tires, the differences between the front and rear tires, the specifications of your spare/compact/donut tire, and what your P.S.I. should be for HOT or COLD temperatures.  Some even go so far as to tell you what it should be per MPH, if you happen to be racing.

Incorrect tire pressure can have effects on how the vehicle corners at high performance and should be corrected before long road trips. It can also effect your fuel economy. Don’t get caught by surprise with flats or blowouts!!! Check your P.S.I before road trips and after seasons change.

The average cost of a new car is around $35,000. But if you have patience and time to shop around , why not know what to buy and what not to buy in a used car? If there is a vehicle that you’ve always dreamed of owning, investigate it. Find out what  the usually problems/or the most pricey issues it may have. Ask the dealer if you can take it for a Pre-Purchase Inspection. The average cost of a PPI is $200.00. Do you have room in your budget to save on future repairs? If so, get the PPI, it is worth it.

Listen to your car

We do not suggest maintenance for our benefit. It is so that our customers do not become inconvenienced by automotive breakdowns at the wrong times, i.e. – during vacations, weekend road trips, or extended travel.  You don’t want to be stranded on the side of the road during extreme seasonal weather without creature comforts such as air conditioning, heating, and/or brakes.

If your owner’s manual shows requirements for periodic maintenance, abide and don’t delay the recommended maintenance.  Don’t wait because the alert on your dashboard has not yet been activated by your car.

When customers try to get an “OK” from Loeffler’s to delay service, we will ALWAYS tell them to listen to your car. The fact of the matter is that delaying your service requests for your vehicle often cause you to pay more for repair costs than you would by performing the routine maintenance repairs when called for.   Whenever we perform a diagnostic on a vehicle, we list on the repair ticket all of the services requested by and for your car.  Certainly, the price of two or more services can seem steep, but it’s better to get all of the problems solved than to procrastinate, and end up paying more in the long run.

Things you should think about when purchasing a car

European cars are generally more expensive. They are extremely high precision and performance vehicles. Hence the costs for maintenance might appear to be more than what you expected.  With an American or Japanese car, an oil change might run around $30.00 to $60.00. With an Audi, it could be around $300.00, and that’s for a ten-year-old car.  Imagine if it was brand new!!

Loeffler’s suggest researching the vehicle which you are looking to purchase. Look for things like:

  • Typical problem issues
  • When oil changes are needed, how much would they cost and how often should they be done?
  • What issues can be serviced at an automotive shop vs taking it to the dealer
  • What is usual wear and tear and how do you recognize when you need maintenance
  • Maintenance costs associated with the vehicle and engine type

Most repairs can be performed by automotive specialists like Loeffler’s. For issues that require components connected to chips and reprogramming you might have to take the car to the dealer.  Research what those services might include and the average price. If you have a really special car you might find that there are things ONLY your dealer can handle.
